Overall a great experience. It's great to have a company where you can talk to people who know what they are doing. They were extremely professional. From initial office staff through to the engineer doing the installation. I would strongly recommend them.

What’s the cost of EV charging for businesses?

Own a Franchise

There are so many benefits to installing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at your place of business, such as the positive environmental gain, increased employee satisfaction and a boosted reputation, to name a few. But what about the cost? We understand that as a business owner you have to consider the financial impact of any new investment, so we’ve laid out the costs you need to consider with EV charging point installation. We’ll give you a spoiler - it’s probably more cost effective than you think.

EV charging unit cost

The main expense of EV charging for businesses is the cost of the charging point, which you can expect to range from around £1,000 to £2,500, plus VAT. This cost varies depending on the number of chargers installed, the charging point model, and the potential foundations that may need laying (more on that later).

Luckily for businesses, The Workplace Charging Scheme reduces the cost of EV charging point installation for businesses by up to 75%, providing funding of up to £350 per charging point (RAC). The maximum number of charging points that can be claimed under this scheme is 20 doubles or 40 singles. To be eligible for this scheme, you have to meet some criteria:

  • Have off-street parking at your business premises

  • Be able to clarify why your business needs electric vehicle charging points

  • Have the charging points installed by a supplier that is approved by the OZEV (which Mr Charger are!)

Cost of EV installation

When you purchase an EV charging point from Mr Charger, the quoted fee includes installation. Our experienced team knows what they’re doing, so by choosing our experts, you avoid the potential expense of inexperienced electricians, damage to the charging point or the need for multiple site visits.

Installation costs will depend on where the EV charging points are going to be located. If they’re going to be installed to a pre-existing wall, the price will be lower than if you opt for freestanding chargers that need to be inserted into fresh foundations. Don’t worry though, we’ll be able to guide you on the best, most cost effective locations for your new charging units.

EV energy supply

It’s important to look into the energy supply for your place of business, to make sure that you have sufficient supply to power your new EV charging units. If you can install chargers without needing to upgrade your supply, you can save some money, but if you do need to upgrade, the cost will most likely be offset over time through use, as the popularity of EVs grows and more people need to charge up.

EV charger electricity cost

Another main cost of EV charging for businesses is the ongoing expense of electricity. These electrical costs are made up of whatever price your business pays per kWh, which averages around 14 pence in the UK, multiplied by the total number of kWh going through the charging unit. However, as we discussed in our 3 reasons businesses are making the transition to EVs blog, the switch to EVs will save you money in comparison to the use of petrol and diesel vehicles, even when taking into account the cost of electricity.

If you’re a business with a lot of customer footfall, EV charging points can be a great way to attract more visitors to your site. Offering paid-for EV charging can be an additional stream of revenue for your business, or providing free public charging is a great incentive for customers to shop with you.
