What are the different types of EV?

A glossary of the different types of electric vehicles and their acronyms to help you understand which is the right fit. 


Electric vehicle (EV) 

A vehicle powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a battery and is capable of being charged from an external source. 

Battery electric vehicle (BEV)

A fully electric vehicle that runs entirely on battery power. 

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV)

A hybrid electric vehicle with a combination of a traditional internal combustion engine and a rechargeable battery. Plugs into an external power source to charge the battery. 


Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV)

A car that has official tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions of less than 75g/km. Eligible for grants and benefits from the UK government.


Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) 

A vehicle with both a petrol or diesel engine and an electric motor. 

Range-extended EV (REx)

An electric vehicle with a backup petrol generator to extend the range. The petrol generator converts a liquid fuel, such as gasoline, into electrical energy whilst the vehicle is driving. 

Full Hybrid / “Self-Charging” Hybrid

A hybrid electric vehicle that uses both a fuel-powered combustion engine and an electric motor that is charged through regenerative braking.
